Your final option is to use freeware cleaning apps. And it doesn’t identify and remove duplicate files like Gemini 2. What’s missing? Besides CleanMyMac’s slicker interface, it doesn’t offer a feature comparable to CleanMyMac’s Space Lens, include an app remover, or run optimization scripts. It cleans up files that may negatively impact the performance of your Mac.It cleans up malware to keep you and your computer safe, and.It cleans up information from apps and the internet that may compromise your privacy,.It frees up space occupied by unneeded files,.MacClean can clean up your Mac in a number of ways: A family license for up to five Macs costs $39.99, and The software comes with a 60-day money-back guarantee. A personal license for one Mac costs $29.99, or you can subscribe for $19.99/year. If you’d like most of the features of CleanMyMac in a more affordable package, have a look at MacClean. It includes more features than CleanMyMac, including Find Duplicates and Defragmentation, and has tools that regularly check your hard drive for physical corruption. The best part? Drive Genius is also used and recommended by the tech geeks at the Apple Genius Bar. The app includes every feature a cleaner app has to offer, plus additional protection against viruses and malware which helps protect your investment from any threat. It’s the runner-up in our Best Mac Cleaner Software review, where my teammate JP sums up the application’s strengths: Read our full review.Īfter a recent price drop, it’s now actually less expensive than purchasing CleanMyMac outright. The Premium Alternative: Drive GeniusĪre you looking for a single app that includes all of the cleanup features you need? Prosoft Engineering’s Drive Genius ($79) is a little harder to use but offers enhanced security and optimization. There are a number of similar apps that are significantly easier on your pocket, as well as free utilities that will clean up your Mac, though you’ll need a small collection of them to match CleanMyMac’s functionality. If you need de-duplication, Gemini 2 will cost you a little more. You can buy it outright for about $90, or subscribe on a yearly basis for about $40. It Costs More Than the CompetitionĬleanMyMac isn’t cheap. There are a few quality Mac cleanup apps that do just that. Rather than purchasing and running two different programs to cover the bases, you might prefer to use just one app that can do it all. Gemini adds the much-needed duplicate file detection and deletion. Our winner is actually a combination of two MacPaw apps-CleanMyMac and Gemini-because CleanMyMac on its own doesn’t have all of the features to compete with the leading competitors. I mentioned earlier that CleanMyMac is the winner of our Best Mac Cleaner Software review, but technically speaking, that’s not the whole story. Why should you consider an alternative? Two reasons: It Lacks Some Features It Helps You Visualize Your Files and FoldersĬleanMyMac X is a great app. ![]()

Solar power is still fairly rare in Indonesia. “I couldn’t really study at night before,” said Antonius Pekambani, a 17-year old student in Ndapaymi village, east Sumba. Now, villagers frequently gather in the evening to continue the day’s work, gather to watch television shows on cellphones charged by the panels and help children do homework in light bright enough to read. “Off-grid solar there plays an important role in that it will deliver clean electricity directly to those who are unelectrified,” said Daniel Kurniawan, a solar policy analyst at the Institute for Essential Services Reform. Attacks on a Cyber Immune system are ineffective – they continue to function even in an aggressive environment and stop potential attackers in their tracks.” “We believe that the future of thin client development should be determined by Cyber Immunity. However, this belief is nothing more than a myth: thin clients running traditional operating systems are vulnerable, and our internal research shows that they can be hacked with a simple tool in under 10 minutes and be used to spy on users and/or access confidential data,” comments Victor Ivanovsky, KasperskyOS Business Development Lead. It is also believed by many that they are secure to use and less vulnerable to malware than traditional machines. “Thin clients have gained popularity over the last few years, especially after the pandemic, as organisations were seeking cost effective ways of setting up remote workplaces. Kaspersky Secure Remote Workspace is suitable for many areas where a large number of workstations with similar tasks and a standard set of applications are used: the public sector, educational institutions, manufacturing and production plants, fuel and energy sector, healthcare, financial organisations, retail, and others. Another component of the solution – the unified management console – solves the problem of managing and monitoring thin client infrastructure. KTC excludes the possibility of exploiting a wide range of vulnerabilities common in traditional thin clients. At the core of the solution lies KasperskyOS, a microkernel operating system. ![]() Together with Centerm, a global producer of thin clients, Kaspersky produces the KTC (Kaspersky Thin Client) – the world's first thin client with Cyber Immunity that requires no additional antivirus protection tools. The Kaspersky Secure Remote Workspace solution offers a manageable and functional thin client infrastructure that is built according to the secure-by-design principle and the Cyber Immune approach that makes them more resilient to cyberattacks in comparison to traditional thin clients. In response to advancing cyberthreats, Kaspersky promotes the Cyber Immune approach. According to Kaspersky, there are over 60 vulnerabilities in thin clients that could be used by cybercriminals. A compromised thin client could serve as an entry point to the corporate network, and it could be used to gain access to confidential data, take control over other machines on the network, or run malicious software, etc. A thin client on a traditional operating system (OS), Linux or Windows-based, could potentially be targeted by different types of attacks, including spyware. ![]() Thin clients are used in corporate networks around the world to set up workspaces at a much lower cost than when using traditional laptop or desktop computers (thick clients). There are also special cases that should be noted, i.e. Their sinusoidal shape can, in some instances, be altered to approach the efficiency of a ruled grating. Holographic gratings are generally less efficient than ruled gratings because they cannot be “blazed” in the classical sense. The wavelength at which maximum efficiency occurs is the “blaze Wavelength.” The angle made by a groove’s longer side and the plane of the grating is the “blaze angle.” Changing the blaze angle concentrates diffracted radiation to a specific region of the spectrum, increasing the efficiency of the grating in that region. The grooves of a ruled grating have a sawtooth profile with one side longer than the other. ![]() Unless otherwise stated, all performance curves in this brochure present blazed first order Littrow data. Small deviations from the Littrow mounting seldom have an appreciable effect on grating performance other than to limit the maximum wavelength achievable. This mounting is practical and necessary for laser tuning applications, but most applications will require some deviation between the incident and diffracted beams. The blaze angle of a ruled grating is calculated based on this mounting. In this mounting configuration, the diffracted order and wavelength of interest is directed back along the path of the incident light (i=i’). This is the Littrow (or autocollimation) mounting. Because of the infinite number of configurations that a grating can be used in, a standard geometry is used in the measurement of the gratings. The efficiency curves in this brochure present absolute efficiency data.Īngle of incidence plays a role in grating performance. A relative efficiency curve will always show higher values than an absolute efficiency curve for the same grating. When comparing grating performance curves, it is important to keep this in mind. In contrast, relative efficiency compares the energy diffracted into the desired order with that of a plane mirror coated with the same material as the grating. The absolute efficiency of a grating is the percentage of incident monochromatic radiation that is diffracted into the desired order. Grating efficiency is a function of groove shape, angle of incidence and the reflectance of the coating. The general grating equation is usually written as: nλ = d(sin i + sin i’) where n is the order of diffraction, is the diffracted wavelength, d is the grating constant (the distance between successive grooves), i is the angle of incidence measured from the normal and i’ is the angle of diffraction measured from the normal.įor a specific diffracted order (n) and angle of incidence (i), different wavelengths (λ) will have different diffraction angles (i’), separating polychromatic radiation incident on the grating into its constituent wavelengths. To learn more about our ruling and holographic mastering processes, click here. Ruled and holographic gratings differ in their optical characteristics and each type has advantages for specific applications. ![]() We are one of the few companies that produce both types of gratings in-house and has full replication facilities and expertise. Gratings produced from laser constructed interference patterns and a photolithographic process are known as interference or holographic gratings. Physically forming grooves into a reflective surface with a diamond mounted on a “ruling engine” produces ruled gratings. The way in which the grooves are formed separates gratings into two basic types, holographic and ruled. If the wavelength is much smaller than the groove spacing, the facets of the groove will act as mirrors and, again, no diffraction will take place. If the wavelength of the incident radiation is much larger than the groove spacing, diffraction will not occur. The distance between adjacent grooves and the angle the grooves form with respect to the substrate influence both the dispersion and efficiency of a grating. A grating consists of a series of equally spaced parallel grooves formed in a reflective coating deposited on a suitable substrate. ![]() ![]() ![]() Of course, online-only files aren’t available if you lack connectivity.Īfter you first migrate a cloud storage service to the File Provider approach, assume that all your files and folders are online-only. This approach saves space, but may suffer from loading delays with large files or slow connections. Online-only files exist locally only as icon placeholders until they’re opened-they have little cloud icons next to their names in the Finder. There’s no visible indication that a file is offline. However, they consume local storage space, which may be a problem if you’re low on free space. Offline files are stored both in the cloud and on the local drive for quick access. The second change revolves around whether the files exist both locally and online (“offline” or “pinned”) or just online (“online-only”). However, just as when Mac OS X introduced the home folder and its now-canonical subfolders (Desktop, Documents, Library, Movies, Music, and so on), the loss of flexibility will create pain points for some users. (That’s in your home folder’s Library folder, which is non-trivial to access for most users since the Library folder is hidden by default.) From a consistency and coherency point of view, the new standard location is a good thing, since users don’t have to keep track of where each individual service might have its files. All cloud-storage services must now store their files in ~/Library/CloudStorage. The first change is where local files are stored. Some Dropbox users even report one Mac being upgraded to the new File Provider approach, while others continue to use the kernel extension.Īlthough it’s good to have cloud storage integrated into macOS in a coherent fashion, the switch to Apple’s File Provider extension brings with it two key changes that will require adjustments in how you work. It can be hard to tell since cloud storage providers often roll out changes over time or to subsets of customers to test user response, identify concerns, and reduce support loads. My understanding is that Box, Google, and Microsoft have migrated their Mac users to the File Provider approach, whereas Dropbox-probably the most popular among everyday Mac users-has only recently started to encourage those outside its beta program to switch (while others are still being asked to join the beta). That hasn’t happened yet, but Apple often gives developers several years to get with the program. The cloud storage companies undoubtedly felt they had little choice about adopting the File Provider extension because Apple said it would be deprecating kernel extensions at some point. (Everything I say below I’ve tested in macOS 13.2.1 Ventura-it’s possible, even likely, that some details are different in Monterey.) The cloud storage services will likely pull support for older systems at some point, but there’s no telling when that will happen. Earlier versions of macOS don’t support it, so nothing changes for those running older systems for now. The File Provider extension first appeared in macOS 12.1 Monterey, though Apple’s Developer site suggests that it may have subsequently been made available in macOS 10.15 Catalina. I touched on this move a year ago in “ Cloud Storage Forecast Unsettled, with Possible Storms” (4 February 2022). ![]() It provides an Apple-approved framework for integrating remote files into macOS and displaying them in the Finder. ![]() Over the last year, cloud storage services Box, Dropbox, Google Drive, and Microsoft OneDrive-and probably others-have migrated from custom kernel extensions to Apple’s new-ish File Provider extension. #1653: Apple Music Classical review, Authory service for writers, WWDC 2023 dates announcedĪpple’s File Provider Forces Mac Cloud Storage Changes.1654: Urgent OS security updates, upgrading to macOS 13 Ventura, using smart speakers while temporarily blind.#1655: 33 years of TidBITS, Twitter train wreck, tvOS 16.4.1, Apple Card Savings, Steve Jobs ebook.#1656: Passcode thieves lock iCloud accounts, the apps Adam uses, iPhoto and Aperture library conversion in Ventura.#1657: A deep dive into the innovative Arc Web browser. ![]() ![]() This section helps you with the steps to enable 7pace Timetracker for your Azure DevOps Organization and (optional) install the Windows Client to your local system.
